Migrating birds navigate by the sun and stars, Earth's magnetic field, landmarks and inherited route programs, timing their journeys to seasonal food and breeding opportunities. Many accumulate large fat reserves before departure, ride tailwinds and thermals to save energy, travel at night to avoid heat and predators, and depend on a few rich stopover wetlands and coasts to refuel — which is why routes like the red knot's Delaware Bay relay or the cranes' wetland chains are so sensitive to habitat loss.
