A stopover economy: Whooping and Sandhill Cranes stage on the Platte River along the Central Flyway, the Red Knot hops up the Atlantic coast from Tierra del Fuego, the Whimbrel T6 flew almost 18,500 miles in a year on the Pacific Americas Flyway, and the Giant Hummingbird climbs the Andes past 13,000 feet.
Landbirds funnel around seas and deserts. White Storks ride thermals through the Mediterranean corridors, Cuckoos and Common Swifts cross the Sahara to tropical Africa — the swift feeding on the wing the whole way — and Black-tailed Godwits knit together a thousand wetlands from northern Europe to Guinea-Bissau.
The Bar-headed Goose crosses the Himalayas in thin air on the Central Asian Flyway; the Sociable Lapwing flocks from Kazakh steppe to the Middle East; the Amur Falcon rides a 22,000 km annual circuit from eastern Asia across the Indian Ocean to southern Africa.
Shorebirds depend on coastal wetlands: Great Knots refuel at Yellow Sea mudflats, Latham’s Snipe flies 9,000 km from Japan to Australia, Curlew Sandpipers reach Australian wetlands from northern Russia, and the Bar-tailed Godwit skips the stopovers entirely.
Seabirds exploit global winds: the Short-tailed Shearwater glides a 30,000 km figure around the whole Pacific — Kamchatka, the Aleutians, western North America — and returns to the same Tasmanian colonies.
