Regional patterns
Americas
Broad north–south corridors with famous bottlenecks: Swainson's hawks funnel through the Isthmus of Panama, red knots stage at Delaware Bay, sandhill cranes crowd the Central Platte River, and ruby-throated hummingbirds cross or skirt the Gulf of Mexico.
Eurasia–Africa
Migrants funnel around seas and through land bridges — white storks and cuckoos via Iberia — while large soaring birds ride thermals and avoid long open-water crossings. Demoiselle cranes instead climb over the Himalayas.
East Asia–Australasia and the Pacific
Shorebirds depend on Yellow Sea coastal stopovers; bar-tailed godwits and Pacific golden-plovers continue nonstop across open ocean. Siberian cranes follow an East Asian wetland chain to Poyang Lake.
Oceans and poles
Southern Ocean and Pacific seabirds trace huge wind-assisted loops: the Arctic tern's pole-to-pole circuit and the sooty shearwater's trans-Pacific figure-eight are the extremes of the network.
How they do it
Inherited programs set direction and timing, refined by learning. Birds navigate by the sun, stars, landmarks, odors and Earth's magnetic field — broad mechanisms, not cues every species uses equally.
Fuel is fat, deposited at stopovers between nonstop endurance legs. Raptors, storks and cranes soar on thermals; oceanic birds ride tailwinds; many small songbirds migrate at night.
Conservation
A migration is only as secure as its weakest breeding, stopover or wintering site. Recurring pressures include wetland and coastal habitat loss, land-use change, hunting, collisions and light pollution, fisheries bycatch, and climate-driven mismatches in timing and food.
