European white storks avoid broad sea crossings, funneling through the narrow straits of Gibraltar and the Bosporus and detouring through Spain or Turkey at significant travel cost to stay over rising air.
The bar-headed goose flies over the Himalayas above 8,000 m rather than around them, the highest migration known.
The demoiselle crane crosses the Himalayas outbound but flies around their western end inbound; the common cuckoo splits between a Spanish and a Balkan route to the same African wintering grounds.
The red knot rides two ~4,400 km nonstop flights from Mauritania via Germany's Wadden Sea to Siberia in four weeks; godwits and sandpipers stage on the Yellow Sea and East Asian coasts.
