The question: how do birds migrate in different parts of the world — which famous species take which routes, drawn on a map? This atlas covers 14 iconic species and 59 ordered waypoints: schematic corridors built from documented endpoints and stopovers, not literal GPS tracks. Ocean birds ride winds nonstop; soaring raptors and storks hug land where thermals form; songbirds fly by night; geese cross the Himalayas; cranes and shorebirds depend on learned routes and refueling wetlands. A curated set of famous examples, not an exhaustive list.
Migration follows food and daylight: birds breed where summer produces insects and long days, and leave before those resources collapse. Internal clocks set the timing; before departure birds load fat, sometimes doubling their weight. They navigate with an inherited compass direction refined by the sun, the stars, Earth's magnetic field and learned landscape cues. Wind and thermals shape the routes — soaring species funnel through land bridges and straits where rising air forms, while ocean fliers wait for tailwinds. Stopover wetlands and coasts are critical refueling stations. Broad flyways are shared corridors, but each species — and each population, season, age class and year — traces its own variation; no two individuals fly exactly the same line.
