This explainer maps 15 iconic migratory species — a representative selection, not an exhaustive list — spanning both hemispheres, every major inhabited region, the open oceans and Antarctica, each route drawn from a single independent source (12 hosts in all). Coordinates are approximate representative anchors for broad breeding and wintering ranges, not precise tracking fixes. Distances are given in metric first, with source-stated imperial figures as originally reported.

Birds do not simply fly north–south. Storks soar on thermals and avoid open sea; godwits, warblers, plovers and hummingbirds cross oceans nonstop; geese and cranes climb over the Himalayas; hawks funnel through continental corridors; terns and shearwaters cross entire hemispheres of ocean; and penguins swim, walk and drift with the sea ice.
